You can never be prepared enough to be a father. And if you are not into reading books that can guide you through the process, you need not worry. We give you some of the most basic things that your wife will be going through during pregnancy so that you can be prepared in advance and can offer her the help she needs.

1. Morning sickness
About 75 percent of the expectant mothers face morning sickness which includes symptoms like headache, nausea, and vomiting. Additionally, she may not just feel it only in the morning but also throughout the day. This is an extremely irritating period for a woman and you can help her out by trying out different remedies. Different things could work for different women. You can try offering her ginger ale, peppermint tea, seasickness bracelet, crackers, etc.

2. Frequent urination
During pregnancy, your wife would be making frequent visits to the bathroom, probably almost every 30-45 minutes. Do not get irritated every time she asks you to make a stop at a gas station. Try putting yourself in her shoes and imagine how inconvenient this must be for her. At home, make sure that the way to the bathroom is clear with nothing that might make her trip over. Since she will be frequenting the bathroom at night as well, you could have a night light to help her.

3. Mood swings
Be ready for some serious mood swings. She might feel amazing one day and terrible the next. She may love you for a gesture at some point and might curse you for the same later. She might feel cold one moment and start sweating the next. Always remember that it is her hormones that are making her act this way and she has no control over thins. The key is to be mentally prepared for it and be extremely patient.

4. Irrational food cravings
Be prepared for demands that might make no sense to you at all. She might wake you up in the middle of the night and ask for a particular flavor of ice cream. More often than not, you will have to give her what she wants. Be ready to visit the shops at odd hours. However, if there is something that you cannot bring for her, keep your cool and try to make her understand in a loving manner.

5. Difficulty in getting good sleep
In many cases, expectant mothers find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Since they are generally advised to sleep on their side, getting them a full body pillow might help. You could also give her a foot massage or a back-rub, just before bed time. Offering her herbal tea and cuddling her may also do the trick.

6. Physical transformations
Being pregnant and having a baby means a lot of physical changes for the woman. She will gain a lot of weight and will be too drained to keep herself looking great all the time. This also leads to a drop in her self-confidence. Do not get irritated by her constant anxiety over her looks. Just be affectionate and remind her everyday about how much you love her and how lovely she looks.

7. Frequent visits to the doctor
Just know that all through the pregnancy she will be required to make several visits to her gynecologist. Make sure you accompany her to such consultations. This will help her calm her nerves and will assure her that you are in this with her, wholly and completely. Make sure you listen carefully to all that the doctor has to say so that you know exactly how your wife and the baby are doing.

8. Fear of the unknown
Pregnancy and all that comes with it is a very scary thing, especially for first time mothers. It is the fear of the unknown that will be the most difficult to deal with and can mess with yours and your wife’s mental and emotional health. Hear her out when she vents out her emotions. Let her know that you are there to give her a shoulder to cry on. Sharing and listening to each others’ fears will make you both be better prepared for what’s to come. Stay positive and keep reminding her that you will be with her always.
