How to Deal with Conjunctivitis ??!!

Conjunctivitis is one of the examples of an eye problem. Popularly known as ‘pink eye’,

this eye infection is caused to the thin membrane covering the eyeball and the inner area of the eyelid. It happens due to bacteria, virus or pollutants that a person gets exposed to. Since there is a difference between the various types of conjunctivitis, it is important for each of them to be dealt with in a specific manner.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Bacterial Conjunctivitis is known to be caused by three kinds of bacteria i.e. staphylococci, pneumococci, and streptococci. The symptoms, in this case, begin with a yellow discharge from the eyes, pain and subsequent redness. The discharge takes place while sleeping and people wake up with their eyes glued together.
The most known remedy in this case is wiping eyes clear off the discharge with a lukewarm, wet cotton cloth. A physician can be consulted for a prescription of antibiotic eye drops. Any leftover medication from a previous ailment of the same kind is not advised.

Viral Conjunctivitis
A viral conjunctivitis is similar in symptoms as there is a yellow, greenish discharge in this case as well. There are cases of severe pain in the eyes when exposed to bright light. This kind of pink eye is more infectious in nature and precautions are to be taken for at least a week or till it lasts.
Since this kind of infection is usually associated with the cornea, one must consult a physician. Though it may not require an antibiotic treatment, it needs to be detected on time and treated well.

Allergic Conjunctivitis
An allergic conjunctivitis can be caused due to exposure to environmental irritants. This results in excessive itching and swelling of the eyes. It is usually seasonal and occurs with other allergies.

The best remedy for this kind of conjunctivitis is wiping the eye with a moist cotton cloth. A decongestant eye drop also works well in this case. If the allergy is caused because of a chemical, then the best way is to wash off your eyes with cold water, closely followed by a doctor’s opinion on the same.

While the above points outline the various causes, symptoms and remedies for different cases of conjunctivitis, it is suggested that you consult a doctor as soon as you notice that you are coming down with a pink eye.
