How to Avoid Getting Car Sick - man guy drive a car

Road trips are one of the most fun experiences of life and car sickness can take the fun out of any journey. However, if you happen to have car sickness, you do not have to curtail road trips for the rest of your life.

With the following simple steps you can enjoy a long car drive without feeling sick.

1. Sit in the Front
Sitting in the front seat and keeping your focus on the road can effectively help you ward off car sickness. It is better to drive as drivers seldom get car sick. You can always pretend to be driving if you do not have the option to drive or don’t want to drive.

2. Focus on a Non Moving Object
Look out the front and focus on a distant object that is not moving. You can also maintain your focus on the horizon to get a feeling of stability. Avoid looking out from the side windows.

3. Avoid Heat
Heat can aggravate your sickness. It is recommended to turn on the air conditioning in the car or better yet just open your windows if there is a good breeze outside.

4. Try and Nap
Going to sleep is probably your best option. Take a short nap or just close your eyes and try to relax. However, this is a preventive measure. If you are already feeling nauseated, it is not advisable to close your eyes.

5. Take Frequent Breaks
You can always stop for a little rest and refreshment every little while. Walk around a bit to stretch your legs and take deep breaths from the stomach. Frequent stops can help you to prevent the symptoms of car sickness.

6. Snack Frequently
It may help to snack a bit while you are on the move, as an empty stomach can aggravate nausea. Nevertheless, it is not a good idea to stuff your stomach with oily snacks or junk food. Eat healthy snacks such as fruits, dry fruits, roasted chickpeas and yogurt.

7. Divert Attention
It helps to divert your attention from the sickness. You can listen to music, play games on a handheld console or watch a movie on your laptop to keep your mind off the sickness.

8. Use Medication
There are various drugs that can help you prevent car sickness. Dramamine is a popular over-the-counter medication to treat motion sickness. You can also consult a doctor to recommend a medication for you.

Car sickness is caused by a conflict in the brain. Your senses tell the brain that you are at rest whereas your vestibular system tells the brain that you are in motion. This conflict denotes hallucinogenic poisoning to the brain and triggers nausea as the body tries to eliminate everything from the stomach. Car sickness can be kept in check easily if you take certain precautions.
