Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes do it outside. Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minillo make it a race. Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell like it extra hot.
No, this post isn’t a tell-tall about celebrity couples’ sex lives—I’m talking about their workouts. All of these couples make a habit of burning calories together—Cruise and Holmes go for runs, Lachey and Minillo are both triathletes, and Romijn and O’Connell practice Bikram yoga together.
Research has shown that working out together helps creates a better bond, and couples who have fun together by stepping away from responsibilities report happier marriages.
So what if couples doing downward dog in a 100-degree room isn’t your idea of fun? Try these options instead:
- Go for a long walk. My boyfriend and I make sure to get at least one long walk—a couple of hours, usually—in every week. Long walks mean long talks—sometimes a luxury when you’re both juggling work, happy hours and kids.
- Think outside the box. Who needs a jog when you can drive to the beach and rent jet-skis? Or kayaking?
- Try something new. Learning a new sport or taking a class together will make for some serious bonding. Why not sign up for a rock-climbing class or dare to take scuba-diving lessons?
- Teach each other something. He has two left feet and you go salsa dancing with your friends every month? Bring him to your favorite club and teach him a few moves (just not on girl’s night!) Was he a star athlete in high school? Suggest hitting the park/court/wherever and learn his favorite sport.
