While young, we all consider ourselves to be bullet proof. That nothing ever bad can happen to us. That we will always be healthy and strong and agile.
However, we tend to forget one thing: when we’re young, we have no worries; we’re much happier; we play in the open a lot; we’re active. But as we tend to age, our lifestyle tends to become sedentary. And that becomes the root cause of all our health problems. Here are some of the things that could affect the quality of our life in the long run and, maybe even cut it short:
Improper sleep can cause a lot of health issues, from depression to low productivity to irritability to lack of appetite. So make sure you get at least six to seven hours of sleep every night. There are a lot of things you can do to ensure you sleep well. The first thing is of course to eat a minimum two hours before bedtime to enable proper digestion. Then you need a good mattress and a good pillow. And most importantly you need to be relaxed. Pick up a good book before hitting the sack.
I am sure by now you know that eating a burger or a pizza everyday or often, is not doing your heart any favors. These cheesy snacks not only help you pile on weight, they also give rise to acidity, indigestion and high cholesterol. You can gorge on fast food once a week maybe. But that too in moderation, of course. And this applies to all fried, cheesy snacks, including the grub you chow down with your beer.
Sitting too long on your bum also raises your chances of having a cardiac arrest. This 20-year-old kid in the US died from cardiac arrest after playing his video game for 12 hours straight. Then be it sitting in your office, or at home watching TV, you need to move around every 45 minutes or so. Give your legs a workout. Take a small walk, stretch a little, then come back. Also, watching TV for more than 2 to 3 hours is extremely harmful for your heart. So kill the tube.
Watch that weight
Always keep your weight in check. Being obese not only gives you trouble when buying clothes, it also increases your chances of having diabetes, heart trouble, breathing problems. It makes you lethargic and puts immense pressure on your legs. And a million other things. So exercising regularly and following a diet are very important.
Drinking is fine. But don’t push it. Liver cirrhosis ain’t funny. It kills you. It has killed many a celebrities, people who thought having money makes them untouchable. Don’t binge drink. Have a glass or two maximum and stop right there. Restrict your drinking to maximum twice a week. Have a good time, don’t drink too much and throw up and wake up with a bloody hangover. Where’s the fun in that?
Smoking like a Chimney
Cut down while you still have a shot. Smoking causes cancer. There are a million studies that prove that. Not only lung, esophagus, and larynx (voice box), but mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach, and cervix, and also, acute myeloid leukemia. Is it worth the damn risk? It harms almost every organ in your body. It also causes heart disease and strokes. And the biggest of them all: impotency. Still want to smoke? And no chewing tobacco is no better. Get help, today and quit.
Bust the Stress
We all deal with so much tension in our day-to-day lives and it takes its toll. It affects not only our looks, but also gives hypertension, high blood pressure and what not. It is easy to tell people to relax, but it isn’t as easy to actually do so, given our situations. The way to deal with it is to find something that takes our mind off it, something that makes us happier and less stressed. There are tons of things you can do: yoga, listening to music, exercising, meditating, joining a laughter club, following your passion (gardening, painting etc), playing a sport etc. As much as possible, try and make light of things and laugh them off. Don’t try to stress too much about them, because if you really think about it, it doesn’t help much. For example, if India is playing badly and is about to lose, all your screaming and cursing isn’t going to achieve anything. The best thing to do is to accept it and either continue to watch calmly or turn the TV off.
So it’s up to you, whether you want to live a long, healthy life by correcting your erratic ways, or continue doing what you do and cut short, what could be, a promising future.
