Getting Over Jet Lag Made Easy

Jet lag is a condition in which your body fails to adapt to a rapid change in time zones. A common problem for all frequent fliers, jet lag can really take a toll on the body.

Headaches, fatigue, swelling and erratic bowel movement are only some of the many symptoms of jet lag. Read on to find more about various ways to cope with jet lag.

1. Prepare Early
Give your body some time in advance to deal with the change in time zone. This can be done by shifting your daily activities like sleeping and eating in accordance with the time zone of your destination. You might have to cook dinner at 3 in the morning for this, but it will be worth it.

2. Sleep
Make sure you are not running on a sleep deficit schedule before you board the flight as sleep deprivation can further aggravate the jet lag. You can also opt for an overnight flight which will help you sleep on the flight and arrive refreshed at the destination.

3. Stay Hydrated
This may sound trivial and simple, but staying hydrated helps your body cope with jet lag better. Also avoid dehydrating beverages like coffee and alcohol. Heavy foods should also be curtailed as they can limit you from sleeping soundly.

4. Exercise
Get some movement during the flight and upon landing. Staying seated in the same position for prolonged periods can cause fatigue and muscle pain. You can move around the cabin, stand around for a bit or just stretch in your seat to keep your body energized. Avoid escalators and elevators and use stairs to give your body some exercise.

5. Get Some Light
Daylight plays an important role in setting your body clock. The body requires sunlight to synthesize Vitamin D3, which is required to stay awake. Exposing yourself to sunlight will also help you to keep your body energized.

6. Medications
There are certain pills which help counter the various symptoms of jet lag. These pills generally contain melatonin, which helps regulate the sleeping cycle of the body. However, these pills do not suit everybody and may even alleviate the symptoms of jet lag.

7. Accessorize
Travel accessories like neck pillows, eye mask and noise cancelling headphones are basic requirements for a frequent flier. These accessories enable you to give your body some rest anywhere and anytime.

8. Power Naps
Power naps are short durations of sleep which are long enough to give your body some rest but not long enough to cause drowsiness. These power naps can come in very handy during any long distance travel.

Jet lag is something inevitable if you are travelling from one time zone to another. While its symptoms can’t be eliminated completely, they can certainly be lessened by some simple steps and planning.
