8 Daily Habits to Keep Weight in Check - business man with a briefcase stairs suit

We all want lean and trim bodies. We want to look good. We all want to be able to walk into a store and not have to go the plus size section.

Not only does losing weight make you more attractive and active, it also reduces the risk of obesity-related disorders. There are million fixes in the market: from weight loss pills to magic belts. If you don’t believe in them, then people suggest going to the gym. Who has the time to spend so much time at the gym? After work all you want to do is come home and kick back with a beer.

Losing weight is all about burning calories and as long as you’re doing that, your weight will automatically come down. There are a few things you can do to keep your weight under control:

Part-time fasting
Go on a fast once a week. Pick any day. On those days make sure you drink loads of water. Space out your water intake. In the morning, you can have a glass of fresh juice or coffee and a fruit. This kind of part-time dieting allows time to your body to repair itself. It’s similar to when you turn off your laptop when it heats up too much. You allow it to cool down before starting it again. However, on your fast days refrain from doing any sort of exercise. You can start slow. Skip lunch on one day and skip dinner the next day. Then when you feel ready, go on a full-day fast.

Take the stairs
Skip the lift. Take stairs instead. Every time you do that you’re burning calories. Plus it shapes your calf muscles and strengthens your thighs. Even if you live or have your office on the 11th floor, walk at least for 2-3 floors before taking the lift. Slowly increase your level, keep the 4th floor as your target for a week and so on.

Look for ways to move
If you’re at work, get up often and stretch. After lunch, go for a little walk. Don’t indulge in the 4pm snack binge even if your colleagues are forcing you to. Keep an apple handy. Allow a single cheat day where you indulge in fast food or fried snacks, but keep your portions small. When at home, at in between meals, do on the spot jogging, or push ups, squats, lunges. The trick is to raise your heart rate level. It helps in burning your calories.

Small plate trick
There are a few tricks to eat less.Always pick a small plate with small cutlery, which means you will be reaching for the food often. The idea is to trick your mind that you’re eating a lot. Before a meal, drink half a glass of water. It fills you up. You will eat less. Before getting a second helping, pause a little. Wait for 5-10 minutes before placing your order.

Video-game addict?
Instead of choosing a computer based game, where you have to constantly sit and play, do yourself a favour and get a PSP or an X-Box. Get games where you have to move: tennis or cricket or even wrestling. The motion sensors in these games are phenomenal. You don’t only get a wonderful gaming experience, you also get a mini-workout.

Sleep well
Sleeping well is the key in losing weight. You should get a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep everyday in order for your body to function correctly. Insomniacs, or people who sleep later and get up late, have a lot of problem in shedding those extra kilos. Good sleep keeps your metabolism rate on the move, which helps digestion.

Pick a sport
It could be a simple game of basketball with your buddies in between work, or tennis, or soccer or cricket. Pick any game. Playing sports is sure shot way of melting those calories in no time. Plus you feel good and fit. Also, it energises your metabolism rate.

What to eat
Include carbs and proteins in your diet. Not all carbs are bad. Eating carbs enables your metabolism into action mode. Even protein-rich foods are very helpful. Because your body uses as much calories to break it down, increasing your calorie burning rate. Even, believe it or not, peppers. Including hot peppers in your food helps your burn calories faster. The reason is, they contain a substance called capsaicin, which causes the body to use more energy because of the heat, increasing the rate at which you burn calories.
